SASKATOON – With a total of seven gold medals and 12 podium finishes overall, the University of Calgary Dinos captured their first Canada West men's track and field championship in five years Saturday at the Saskatoon Field House.
The Dinos picked up 132 points in the competition, dethroning the reigning champion Saskatchewan Huskies to bring the R.E. DuWors Trophy back to Calgary for the fifth time overall and the first since 2015.
In women's action, the Dinos had a strong performance overall and finished second in the team competition with 128 points, 14.5 behind the conference champion Huskies.
"We knew we had a chance at conference titles for both men and women," said Dinos head coach
Doug Lamont, named the Canada West men's coach of the year at the event's conclusion. "The men just needed to go out and do their jobs as best as they could, and things tend to work out as they should."
Despite a slip-up in the 4 x 200-metre relay where the Dinos dropped the baton and did not complete the race, the team got contributions from sprints, distance, throws, jumps, and relays to capture a true team title. The Dinos opened up with 67 points on Friday, adding 65 more on Day 2.
Fifth-year jumper
Colin Unruh won the men's high jump competition again with his leap of 2.07 metres, while
Mohamed Asiff outclassed the competition to with the shot put with a heave of 16.84 metres – 77 centimetres further than the silver medallist. Sodienye Nkwonta rounded out the Dinos' medals in the field Saturday with his silver in the triple jump, recording 14.59 metres.
On the track,
Eric Lutz outshone the competition again to pick up his second gold medal of the weekend, adding top spot in the 1,500 to his 1,000-metre win from Friday. Teammate
Alexander James added bronze in the same event, adding to his 3,000-metre gold medal from Friday.
"Eric is in a great space right now," said Lamont. "His fitness is phenomenal, he's really on top of his game and excited to do well, not only for himself, but to contribute to the team – I think that was even more significant for him. And Alex James had a phenomenal weekend – we have always thought he has great abilities, and he definitely came through this weekend with a gold and a bronze."
Brent Stephen added silver in the 600 metres, then ran the second leg in Calgary's bronze medal-winning 4 x 400-metre relay team along with teammates
Kai Spierenburg,
Jordan Samson, and
Daniele Orsini.
The Dinos women, meanwhile, added seven medals to their haul on Saturday, led by a pair of gold medals in the field.
Madison Mayr took home gold in the high jump, leaping 1.71 metres, while
Osereme Omosun added gold in the weight throw to her shot put championship from Friday with her toss of 17.03 metres. And in the triple jump,
Erika Pearson's 11.49 was good enough for the bronze medal.
Omosun was honoured as the female field athlete of the year after her double-gold performance.
"The pressure was on Osereme to do that, because she was expected to win," said Lamont. "She stepped up and performed exceptionally well when she got the opportunity. The entire women's team fought as hard as they could over the two days, and at the end fell jut a few points short."
On the track,
Madeleine Browne and
Sadie Borgfjord took home silver and bronze, respectively, in the 600 metres, with both adding another silver with the 4 x 400-metre relay along with
Natalie McDougall and
Anok Tiordit. The women's 4 x 200-metre relay team of McDougall,
Princess Roberts,
Kristen Fox, and
Chyna Brown also picked up the silver medal, while
Emily Simpson's bronze in the 1,500 metres rounded out an impressive medal haul for the Dinos.
Dinos assistant coach Eric Koo was honoured by the Canada West coaches association as the Assistant Coach of the Year for women's track and field. The Dinos also swept the student-athlete community service awards, with Lutz and
Madeleine Browne taking home the honours.
The Dinos now turn their attention to the U SPORTS national championships, which will take place at the University of Alberta's Butterdome March 5-7.
