Back to Saskatoon to keep season alive

| By:
CALGARY – They made quick work of the Manitoba Bisons to open the Canada West playoffs at home last weekend. Now, the Dinos men's hockey team needs to shake off their season series against the Saskatchewan Huskies and focus on the present.

The Dinos head to Saskatoon to face the Huskies in a Canada West semifinal this weekend. The winner of the best-of-three series faces the winner between UBC and Alberta in the conference championship next week, and will take one of Canada West's two automatic berths at the University Cup in Halifax. The puck drops at 6 p.m. MT Friday at Merlis Belsher Place for Game 1, with Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) following Saturday and Sunday night, also at 6 p.m. MT. CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op will provide live streaming coverage.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Dinos dropped three of their four contests against the Huskies this year, but they did have success on the road with a 3-2 win in double overtime back on Oct. 26. In their last meetings mid-January, Huskies netminder Taran Kozun was sensational, picking up a pair of shutouts in 4-0 and 3-0 wins for the Dinos. Calgary responded by sweeping the Alberta Golden Bears the following week and earned points in seven of their last eight games as they head back to Saskatoon.

GHOSTS OF PLAYOFFS PAST
The playoff history between the Dinos and Huskies dates back 40 years to the 1980-81 season, and this year marks the 13th time the teams have met in the postseason. The results have heavily tilted in favour of the home team, which has won 10 of the previous 12 series. Calgary's last win came at home in 2011, while the last three meetings have come in Saskatoon (2012, 2016, 2018). Two of those went the distance, including an epic triple-overtime contest in 2012, but the Huskies won all three.

ALL-STARS
Both the Dinos and Huskies had four players recognized by Canada West Wednesday with the announcement of the 2019-20 conference all-star teams. Calgary's Matt Alfaro, who won the scoring title, joins Kozun on the first all-star team, with fifth-year Dinos forward Coda Gordon landing on the second team along with Collin Shirley and Gordie Ballhorn of the Huskies. Saskatchewan's Jared Dmyrtiw was named to the all-rookie team, where he was joined by Calgary forward Kaden Elder and goaltender Brodan Salmond.
