Unbeaten Dinos welcome UNBC in playoff rematch

| By:
CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos will start off the new year in a two-game set this weekend against the UNBC Timberwolves. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 5 p.m. on Saturday at Jack Simpson Gym.

NEW YEAR, SAME GOALS
The undefeated Dinos (8-0) are heading into the weekend with a second-place CW standing. Despite the record, there are still plenty of areas the team would like to improve on.

"Defensively, we are not even close to the potential of this group, and look forward to working specifically on our half-court offensive containment," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "Offensively, we have to do a better job of drawing fouls and playing through the paint a little more."

The Dinos are led with a strong set of veteran players. Latvian native Liene Stalidzane leads the Dinos with a 54.2 field goal percentage, 14.8 points per game, and a total of 118 points. Bobbi-Jo Colburn and Sascha Lichtenwald follow with 11.3 and 11.1 points/game, respectively.

TIMBERWOLVES STRIVE TO START STRONG
The Timberwolves (3-5) are looking to start the year on a high note and improve their record. Excluding the set against Victoria in week one, UNBC has won one and lost one game against each team played every weekend. Last time the Dinos and Timberwolves matched up in the playoffs in February 2019, the Dinos took both games by a comfortable margin (81-58 and 92-55).

"UNBC are very well-coached," commented Jennings. "We expect a very challenging defensive game, as their offensive arsenal of Mongomo, Landry, and Shakirova make life difficult for every team they play."

Fourth year Madison Landry leads the Timberwolves with 20.5 PPG, a 47.7 GF%, and 164 total points. Russian guard Alina Shakirova and last year's top scorer Maria Mongomo are close behind with 16.1 and 16.4 PPG apiece.
