CALGARY – A second quarter surge carried the Mount Royal University Cougars past the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team, falling to a 61-42 defeat on Friday at Kenyon Court.
Calgary went ahead 8-6 in the first quarter on a three-pointer from Saavyn Kaur Mann, but MRU edged in front 10-8 by the end of the period. The second quarter was a tough stretch for the Dinos, who went 3-of-17 from the field while the Cougars scored 21 points. Marissa Richards had seven of them, and Asha Donnelly added a three-pointer and a jumper as MRU turned a 14-12 game into a 31-16 halftime lead.
The Dinos looked to push back after the half, outscoring the Cougars 15-13 in the third quarter on the strength of fast-break baskets from Milica Gajic and Kaur Mann. Kaur Mann's layup trimmed the deficit to 11 midway through the period, but MRU settled back in and pushed the margin as high as 21 in the fourth.
Richards led the Cougars with 15 points, while Donnelly finished with 12 and Presley Hopf added 10. Elise Carline pulled down 12 rebounds.
Christine Geraldo led the scores for Calgary with 10 points, seven of them in the fourth quarter. Kourtney Oss picked up eight points, six rebounds and five blocks on the night, and Emma Yarwood grabbed 10 rebounds.
