CALGARY – After opening up the season strong on Thursday night, the University of Calgary Dinos were able to scramble a point against the Thompson Rivers University in a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Dinosaur Field.
The Wolfpack opened up the scoring just a little after the 30-minute mark on a ball across from Chantal Gammie before Camryn Curts struck one just out of the reach of Lauren Houghten to find the back of the Dinos net for the first time this season.
The opening goal settled both teams in as the two teams exchanged chances to no avail with the first 45 ending 1-0 in favour of the Wolfpack.
The fight finally payed off for the Dinos in the 69th minute when
Montana Leonard was able to solve Danielle Robertson and slot one through a crowd of Wolfpack defenders and in between the legs of the screened TRU keeper.
After the tying goal from Leonard, the Dinos were motivated to push ahead. A pair of great chances from Leonard and freshman
Breanne Gallagher were turned away stone cold by the Thompson Rivers keeper to end the match in a draw.
"They deserved that 1-0 lead after the first half," said Calgary head coach
Troye Flannery, "but I thought the second half was us. We were unfortunate not to have a couple of goals today."
The Dinos will pack their bags for their first road trip of the season next week to face Regina and Saskatchewan next weekend, while TRU will host MacEwan and Alberta back home in Kamloops.
