Dinos settle for draw in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A second-half Montana Leonard goal looked to have the Dinos headed for a road win before the Thompson Rivers WolfPack scored a late tally to earn a 1-1 draw in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Calgary's record moves to 5-0-2 with the tie, extending their unbeaten string in conference play to a remarkable 20 games, while TRU falls to 1-4-2.

The Dinos had 12 shots on goal in the first half and used their size and their skill to  their advantage.  Six minutes in, they got a free kick from Amy Mikuska from  25 yards out but was read easily by TRU keeper Danielle Robertson.  The WolfPack's best threat came in the 30th minute.  Chantal Gammie back flipped the ball to Camryn Curts who fired it from 30 yards out.  Dino keepr Lauren Houghton sprawled to keep it out before Rylee Mugridge was able to cash in.

In the 39th minute, Dino Maiya Lee used her speed to break through the middle and tried to split two Pack defenders.  Cassie Morris got her hand on Lee's shoulder while Julia Burkart shoulder also touched her and she fell in the box. Official Brian Flammack called advantage and no penalty kick which drew the ire of Calgary head coach Troye Flannery.

The second half saw the veteran Calgary squad start to dominate.  They opened the scoring in the 59th minute as Leonard  scored her league-leading eighth goal as the Dinos capitalized on a WolfPack turnover by Robertson.

Robertson recovered and made some key stops in the second half including one point blank on Kelsie McDonald in the 81st minute.

Thompson Rivers got the equalizer in the 86th. Some intense pressure resulted in a Calgary turnover. Taylor Miller  started and finished the play with a shot to the lower left of the net which evaded Houghton.

The Dinos had 21 shots in the contest, 14 on goal compared to three shots (all on goal) for Thompson Rivers. Robertson had 13 saves.

Calgary next heads south to Kelowna for a Sunday tilt with the UBC Okanagan Heat, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. MT live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
