Provincial foes visit Dinosaur Field

| By:
CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team will host a pair of northern Alberta opponents, when they take on the MacEwan University Griffins and the University of Alberta Golden Bears for the second time this season.

Both matches will kick off at 2:15 p.m. at Dinosaur Field, with the Dinos taking on the Golden Bears on Saturday and the Griffins on Sunday.

NEXT MAN UP
Calgary comes into the weekend with some injuries to a number of key players including leading goal scorer Dominik Zuczek, who was injured in the match against UBCO last weekend and missed the contest against Victoria. The Dinos will need a full team effort this weekend, and will look to forwards such as Decklin Mahmi and Frederik Hansen to contribute offensively.

OFFENSIVE DEFENCEMAN
Third-year defender Sam Gagne has contributed on both sides of the ball this year, as he is tied for second on the team in goals while only playing in five of nine games. Gagne is shooting an incredibly high percentage as well: he has scored two goals on just three shots.

CONSISTENT DUO
Goalkeeper Jake Ruschkowski and central defender Nahum Tsegai are the only two players on the Dinos who have played all 720 minutes for the team this season. The two have developed a great chemistry, and are the vocal leaders during the game, keeping things organized at the back.

HOME FIELD ASPIRATIONS
While there are still five regular season games remaining, the Dinos currently sit in second place in the Prairie division with a record of 5-4-0, and the playoffs are just around the corner. If the Dinos can remain in second place or better, they will host the quarterfinals at Dinosaur Field – where they are 3-1 this season.

NOTES
  • Alberta is still looking to regain their form from last year where they did not lose a regular season game, finishing with a 12-0-2 record in 2018
  • The Golden Bears are lacking offence this season, scoring just seven goals in eight games this season
  • Matthew Miki has been the Bears' best playmaker this season, as he is tied for fifth in Canada West with three assists in just six games

NOTES
  • MacEwan's lone win on the season came against the Dinos back on Sep. 7 when they beat the Dinos 2-1 in Edmonton
  • Part of the Griffins' issue this season has been the fact that they lead Canada West in red cards with four, causing them to play shorthanded in a number of games this season
  • The Griffins will look to get more shots off this weekend, as they are second-last in Canada West in shots attempted, taking only 77 shots on the season
