CALGARY – The University of Calgary women's soccer team makes its way back home this weekend after picking up six big points on the road in Saskatchewan.
The team will get set to host the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a match with the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday at noon. Dinosaur field will be the site for both games during the weekend set.
BOUNCE BACK WEEKEND
After finishing the opening weekend of the young season with a commanding 5-0 win followed up by a 1-1 draw, the Dinos were motivated to steal six big points away from home. The team headed East to take on the Regina Cougars and the Saskatchewan Huskies in their neighbour province. Calgary showed dominance against the Cougars, scoring four goals on the way to a 4-0 win and closed the weekend out in a tight 2-1 battle against the Huskies to move into a tie for first place in the Pacific Division.
STRIKE FORCE
The Dinos striker core, consisting of
Montana Leonard and
Kelsie MacDonald have been nothing less of spectacular in the first two weekends on the Canada West season. Leonard is currently averaging 1.25 points a game, scoring five goals in four games so far while MacDonald has been supplying the assists, notching two assists to accompany her three goals, coming in the form of a hat trick in the season opener.
BRICK WALL
Although the attack of the Dinos has been fantastic, there is no overlooking the great defensive work that Calgary has been demonstrating. The team currently sits third in Canada West in goals against, with only two goals getting past
Lauren Houghton early on. The back line is also limiting opponents to only 0.50 goals a game.
