CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team concludes the home portion of their Canada West schedule when they host the Victoria Vikes this weekend at Hawkings Field.
FILLING THE NET
The Dinos opened their conference campaign last weekend with a pair of home games against the UBC Thunderbirds. Both games ended in one-goal setbacks for the home side with the 'Birds earning 2-1 and 4-3 wins. Calgary showed resilience on Sunday, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game. The four goals scored on the weekend were the most by the Dinos since Oct. 22-23, 2011 when they netted eight in two games with Victoria.
RUN THIS BROWN
Fourth-year midfielder
Nicole Brown was an offensive force for the Dinos in the opening weekend. In their season opener, Brown set up
Jen Wishart for the team's only goal. The next day, Brown tallied back-to-back goals, helping the Dinos tie the score mid-way through the match. She becomes the first Dino since 2011 to score twice in a game.
LAST MATCHUP
The last time the Dinos and Vikes faced off was on Oct. 14, 2018 – a game that ended in a 2-2 tie. The draw was one of two for the Dinos last season, who also earned a 2-2 result versus the Thunderbirds on Sept. 29, 2018.
FIFTH YEAR FINALE
Sunday's game will mark the final match at home for four fifth-year Dinos using their final year of eligibility this fall. Both
Jenna Birch-Jones and
Meghan Norlander joined the program in 2015 out of North Vancouver while fellow seniors
Jenna Bower and
Lauren Hayes hail from Oliver, B.C. and Victoria respectively.
