KELOWNA, B.C. – At home on the UBC Okanagan Gymnasium, the Heat women stayed in the game for more than three quarters, however, the visiting Calgary Dinos would prove their No. 2 national ranking, dropping the hosts 68-43.
The Dinos quick start on Friday night would be matched by the Heat, who outscored the visitors in the middle two frames, but a strong fourth-quarter from the Dinos, including eight points from
Michaela Nieuwenhuizen, saw the Calgary side topple the Heat (20-6) in the fourth quarter.
The loss drops UBCO to (1-8) on the year as they continue their six-game slide. The Dinos stay undefeated and improve to (7-0).
The Dinos would open the game up (25-12), but the Heat would fight back, closing the gap to as little as four in the second quarter. A pair of quick threes from
Liene Stalidzane, part of her game-high three treys in the match, would re-open Calgary's lead as the Dinos took a (33-25) lead into the half.
Bobbi-Jo Colburn would lead the Dinos with 10 points through 20, while Jordan Korol matched Colburn's 10 as the Heat's point leader at the half.
The three-ball proved a useful tool for Calgary to grab an eight-point lead in the first half, draining six from beyond the arc while shooting 44% from the field. The Heat connected on one-of-three from three-point land, and 40% from the field.
The Heat would cut the deficit to as little as seven late in the third.
Korol would lead UBCO with team-high 14 points, adding four boards. Kelsey Falk would contribute eight points, five boards, and three assists in the losing effort
Stalidzane would finish with a game-high 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Colburn would add 14 points, and Nieuwenhuizen would finish with 10.
The two teams face off again Saturday at 5 p.m. MT.
