KELOWNA, B.C. – The third-ranked University of Calgary Dinos used a quick start and an explosive second half to improve to 7-0 with an 89-50 win over UBC Okanagan Friday night.
Grabbing the lead early, the Dinos would hold a double-digit advantage from nearly start to finish, pushed by
Brett Layton's game-high 16 points, who added eight boards.
Second-year guard Hafith Moallin would lead the Heat with 10 points, adding four boards in another strong showing for the 2018-19 All-rookie team member.
The loss is UBCO's sixth straight as they fall to 1-8, while the Dinos stay undefeated and improve to 7-0 atop the conference standings.
The Dinos would open the game on a remarkable 17-0 run. Sebago Jean-Charles would score the Heat's first basket at the 2:17 mark of the first quarter as the Heat found themselves down (19-2) after one frame.
Despite UBCO closing the deficit to 14 points by halftime, Calgary's quick start would guide them towards a (35-23) lead, boosted by
Mason Foreman's nine points in the half. For the Heat, Moallin would have a team-high six points and four boards at the break.
Calgary would outscore the Heat (32-15) in the third stanza, including a buzzer-beater from
Simon Kutzschmar, pushing their lead to 29.
The visitors would increase their lead to 39 by the end of the match, finishing with four players in double digits.
In his first season with the Heat, Keaton Souster injected some much-needed energy into his Heat team in the second half, playing a career-high 14 minutes, grabbing seven boards and eventually fouling out.
The two teams wrap up conference play in 2019 Saturday night, with tip off at 7 p.m. MT.
