CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos will play the Trinity Western Spartans in a two-game set this weekend. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday at Jack Simpson Gym.
WIN COLUMN WEEKENDS
After a two consecutive weekend sweeps against the UBC Thunderbirds and the BrandonBobcats, the Dinos (4-0), still ranked No. 2 in the nation, want to extend their streak and continue to improve their play this weekend.
"Every weekend from a result perspective is so critical," said head coach
Damian Jennings. "Ultimately, our disappointment is that we do focus on the technical, tactical, or psychological developments we want from ourselves. We just didn't execute and deliver versus Brandon based on that criteria."
So far, guard
Liene Stalidzane has been leading the Dinos with 23 field goals, 11 three pointers, and a total of 60 points. Veterans
Sascha Lichtenwald,
Bobbi-Jo Colburn, and last year's top shooter
Erin McIntosh are just behind, with 46, 42, and 40 points to start the season.
SPARTANS SEEK A FEW MORE POINTS
The Spartans (1-3) are hoping to pick up after two tough losses against the TRU WolfPack last weekend. While the Dinos have won all their games with a margin wider than 10 points, the WolfPack have lost all theirs within 10, and are looking to close the gap.
"Trinity is a very well-coached program," commented Jennings. "Whenever you have a team with a top scorer in the forward position, complimented by very strong slasher/drivers, plus a backcourt that have zero inhibition around taking and making perimeter looks, you know you are in for a tough defensive series."
Leading the Spartans is second-year forward Nicole Fransson with 35 field goals, a 51.5 shooting percentage, and an impressive total of 84 points. Close behind is guard Kianna Wiens, leading with seven three pointers and 58 total points.
