CALGARY – Tight defence and fast attacks brought the University of Calgary Dinos to an 89-45 victory against the Brandon Bobcats in their Canada West regular season home opener at the Jack Simpson Gym on Saturday night.
The Dinos improve to 3-0 on the young season, while the Bobcats are now winless in five games.
Brandon got off to a strong start in the opening quarter, keeping pace with the Dinos thanks to some steady rebounding. The Dinos managed to take a four-point lead into the second quarter where they extended it with a 16-2 run.
Bobbi-Jo Colburn was a major contributor on that run with a pair of three pointers.
Colburn ended the first half with 13 points, while Hailey Maas led the Bobcats with seven.
"Brandon put up a wonderful level of competition, particularly in the first half," said Dinos head coach
Damian Jennings. "Kudos to Brandon, they competed hard."
The Dinos put together another long scoring run with 18 consecutive points to push their lead to 66-41 by the end of the third quarter.
Sascha Lichtenwald scored 10 out of the 24 earned points in the third by Calgary.
The Bobcats were held to four points and 16.7% shooting in the fourth quarter as the Dinos capped off their night with 23 more points and 57.1% shooting.
Lichtenwald scooped up an impressive 22 points in the win, while Colburn and guard
Liene Stalidzane scored 15 each. Logan Biccum and Mass contributed 11 points for Brandon.
"We want to tidy up the intellectual part of our play," said Jennings. "I want to think about what we're doing, where we are, and where we want to be. I'd like to see that change and improvement in them tomorrow."
The Dinos and the Bobcats face each other again on Sunday to conclude the weekend. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. MT from the Jack Simpson Gym.
