Dinos overcome slow start to earn sweep

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos completed a sweep of the Brandon Bobcats with a 67-51 win on Sunday afternoon at the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Dinos now have a 4-0 record to start the season strong, while the Bobcats fall to 0-6.

The first quarter of the game found Calgary and Brandon battling neck-in-neck. Calgary eventually gained a 17-14 lead thanks to a 9-2 run.  A 14-5 run, 61.5% shooting from the field, and eight points by guard Logan Biccum kept the score close for Brandon as they trailed Calgary by two at half. Biccum scored 14 of her 15 points in the opening half, while Dinos guard Katie Upham completed the first two quarters scoring 10 points.

"Brandon made it very difficult for us to operate offensively," commented Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "Whenever we made mistakes, and there were a number of them, for sure they punished us."

After a close first half, the Dinos widened the margin in the third quarter. Following some fast breakaways and nine turnovers by the Bobcats, the Dinos built their lead to 54-46. The Dinos dominated the final quarter limiting the Bobcats to just eight shot attempts. Upham finished the night with 12 points, while Erin McIntosh and Liene Stalidzane scooped up 10 each. Upham and McIntosh added six steals each.

Biccum's 15 points led her team, while guard Chelsea Misskey grabbed 11 points.

"They did react. Tactically, no, but in physical effort and focus, there was probably a bit more there," said Jennings, on the Dinos' performance in the second half. "We have to get better; it's an early stage of the season and we're not a perfect operation, but we'll get there."

Up next, Calgary will face the Trinity Western Spartans for a two-game set starting on Friday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m., in the Jack Simpson Gym. Brandon will match up against the Victoria Vikes on the road, starting on Friday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m.
