CALGARY – Kelsey Roberts posted her second shutout of the season with 28 saves while
Paige Michalenko provided the offence as the University of Calgary Dinos swept the Mount Royal Cougars with a 1-0 win Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
The win gives the Dinos sole possession of first place in Canada West with an 8-4-0 record through 12 games and puts them five points clear of their crosstown rivals.
Roberts was tested early, making 11 saves in the opening period to keep the game scoreless heading to the second. There, fourth-year defenseman
Paige Michalenko earned her third goal of the season with an assist from
Dana Wood.
Mount Royal returned fire, putting heavy pressure on the defensive line, giving them everything they had until the buzzer. It wrapped up with 13-5 shots in favour of Mount Royal.
The Cougars were finding some opportunities on the Dinos net as the game snaked towards its end. However, they were unable to sneak past Roberts, who has a save percentage of .950 this season. The game closed with a Dinos victory of 1-0.
Calgary's Michalenko,
Delaney Frey,
Rachel Paul, and
Holly Reuther earned two shots each on net. Mount Royal's Kate Scidmore led her team with seven shots, followed by Mackenzie Butz, Camryn Amundson, and Anna Purschke with three each. Dinos goalie Roberts made 28 saves to the Cougars' Cassie Shokar's 14.
Calgary faces Lethbridge in a home-and-home series next week, beginning Friday night with a 7 p.m. puck drop at Father David Bauer Arena.
