Dinos slide into first with win over Pronghorns

CALGARY – Week after week, the University of Calgary Dinos' offence reaches new heights.

Hosting the Lethbridge Pronghorns, the Dinos scored five goals in a Canada West game for the first time since 2016, winning 5-1 on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Sara Craven (1g, 2a) and Delaney Frey (2g, 1a) potted three points while Kelsey Roberts turned away 16 shots in the win.

Alicia Anderson made 30 saves and Alli Borrow scored the lone goal for the Pronghorns.

"Today was a huge win for us, Lethbridge has been a strong team so we knew it wasn't going to be an easy game, and everything went our way tonight which was nice," commented Frey.

Roberts kept the Pronghorns at bay during a shaky first 10 minutes of the game, but once the Dinos got one chance on net, they just kept getting more. The Pronghorns got called for a cross checking penalty late in the first period and the Dinos capitalized. Craven faked a shot and passed it to Frey who one timed the puck past the Lethbridge goalie. "This week in practice we focused on our power play a lot more than usual because it has been struggling, and moving Sara [Craven] back I think really made a difference," said Frey. "We practiced it and it worked in the game and that was nice."

Frey extended the Dinos' lead at 8:33 of the middle frame.  With good offensive work in front of the net from Jordyn Burgar and Rebecca Clarke, Frey finished the play with a clean backhand shot into the net for her second of the night.

The Dinos made it 3-0 just 11 seconds later. Off the faceoff, Frey and Craven developed a two-on-one that saw Craven score. Holly Reuther gave the Dinos a 4-0 lead at the 11:15 mark of the second period. Elizabeth Lang, under pressure passed the puck to right in front of the Lethbridge net, where Reuther was waiting for the one timer.

The Pronghorns broke the shutout late in the second period on an unassisted goal by Borrow.

Not showing any signs of slowing down, the Dinos came back and scored their fifth goal of the night 57 seconds into the third period. Merissa Dawson fired a shot from the point, which deflected off a Lethbridge player in front and found its way to the back of the net. With the win the Dinos move ahead of the UBC Thunderbirds and into first place in the conference. The Pronghorns slip into fifth place.

The rematch between these two teams will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m at the Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge
