CALGARY – With the regular season wrapped up, the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team will begin their postseason quest when they head out to B.C. to take on the Trinity Western Spartans in the Canada West quarter-final.
The matchup will take place under the lights Saturday in Langley, B.C. at 8:15 p.m. MT, with CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op providing the live streaming coverage.
THE SPARTANS, AGAIN
Somehow, it always seems that these teams end up facing each other in the postseason. A year ago, in the same game, the Dinos fell 4-3 in penalties after earning a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes against the Spartans. The 2017 season also saw the Dinos heading to TWU for a postseason contest, and in 2016 they met in Edmonton in the conference's bronze medal match. In 2015 it was a home date against the Spartans, and in 2012 it was a 9-8 decision in penalties, going against the Dinos. Saturday night will mark the fifth straight year the teams have met in the playoffs, and the sixth time in eight years – and Calgary will be looking for its first postseason win in that span.
TIGHTEN UP
Goalkeeper
Jake Ruschkowski has been one of the main bright spots for the Dinos this season, currently sitting second in Canada West with 76 saves. However, if the Dinos are hoping to move on, they will have to be better defensively than they were in their last matchup with the Spartans. In their meeting earlier this year, the Dinos gave up 23 shots and Ruschkowski made an incredible 15 saves to keep it just a 1-0 loss, which Calgary will be hoping he does not have to do again.
QUOTABLE
Ruschkowski on how last weekend's 1-0 win over Mount Royal can hopefully give the Dinos a boost heading into the playoffs: "I think when it comes to playoffs in this league, anybody can win a game, so going in with momentum is huge. Even if we are playing at Trinity or at UBC, anyone has a chance to win on any given day."
