Two third-period goals sink Dinos at home

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos fell to the University of Manitoba Bisons 2-0 on a pair of third-period goals Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

After dropping their first game of the season last weekend to UBC, the Dinos looked to return to the win column at home but Manitoba, with the help of an extended 5-on-3 power play, spoiled that opportunity. Kelsey Roberts made 17 of 19 saves in the Calgary goal, and Erin Fargey made 16 saves for the win and shutout for Manitoba.

The game remained scoreless through 40 minutes of play despite chances for both sides. The Dinos' best chance came halfway through the second period when Elizabeth Lang attempted a wraparound but couldn't slip it past Fargey. On the opposite side of the ice,Roberts made two excellent saves on an original shot and rebound chance right in front by Polina Goncharova. Shots after two periods of play was in favor of the Dinos 13-11.

The two teams started the third period looking like they were destined for overtime, until halfway through the frame Calgary took back-to-back body checking penalties 20 seconds apart. The Bisons capitalized on the two-man advantage as Emilie Masse tipped a point shot past Roberts to take the lead.

Shortly thereafter the Bisons put the game away when Goncharova made a pass from the defensive zone up to Sheridan Oswald who had slipped past the Dinos defence, and deked a sprawling Roberts to put the Bisons up 2-0. The Dinos pulled their goalie in the final minutes to try and get some offence but were unable to convert.

"Not the result we wanted, but not the way we want to play either," said Dinos Head Coach Danielle Goyette. "We lost as individuals not as a team, I don't feel we played as a team tonight. Hopefully we learned a lesson tonight and we will turn around tomorrow and get ready for the second game."

The rematch between these two teams is set for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena, live on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
