CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos were able to find the back of the net twice en route to a 2-1 victory over the University of Manitoba Bisons on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.
Coming off a 2-0 loss and being held scoreless over their past two games, the Dinos were able to find some offence in the form of
Dana Wood and
Annaliese Meier picking up their first goals of the season. Chloe Snaith was able to get the Bisons on the scoreboard late in the competition, but the visitors were unable to find the tying goal.
The Dinos improve to 4-1-1 on the year while Manitoba drops to a 2-4-0 record to start the young Canada West season.
A penalty-ridden first period saw both teams get their chances with the advantage. After neither team was able to capitalize on the powerplay, Wood was able to find the back of the net to give her team the lead from a low slapshot that was able to squeak in for her first career goal.
"Most of the time those shots don't go in," Wood said of her first career tally. "It's always something special when they are able to find the net."
After a scoreless second frame, Meier extended the Dinos lead early in the final period off a wrist shot from the hash marks over the blocker of Amanda Shubert.
With only four minutes left in the game, Snaith was able to find a loose puck and snap one home to cut the deficit to one. Despite the late push and a pulled goalie, the Dinos defence was able to hold off Manitoba to take the 2-1 victory.
Kelsie Roberts had yet another impressive night in net stopping 24 of the 25 shots that she faced. Shubert also had a noteworthy night for the Bisons, making 25 saves.
The Dinos will remain at home next weekend against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for a two game set at Father David Bauer Arena on Friday and Saturday. Manitoba are set to stay on the road and head west for a date with the UBC Thunderbirds.
