WINNIPEG – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team continued its winning ways Friday night in Winnipeg, defeating the hometown Manitoba Bisons by a score of 5-2 at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
Calgary outshot the Bisons in the game by a total of 50-14.
The Dinos trailed the Bisons at the start of the second period but a pair of goals from first-year
Kaden Elder put Calgary in front 3-2 and they never looked back.
The win keeps the Dinos record unblemished, improving to 5-0-0-0 in this early Canada West season.
"Manitoba always has hard working and physical teams," commented Calgary head coach
Mark Howell. "We addressed a few things after the first, our leadership group took charge and we came out better in the second, followed by an outstanding third period."
With the loss, the Bisons see their record slip to 2-3-0-0.
Despite out-shooting the Bisons 14-5 through the opening frame, the Dinos found themselves down 2-1 heading to the locker room. Calgary's assistant captain
Coda Gordon scored the game's opening goal just 1:12 into the game on a delayed penalty. The Bisons managed to stymie the Dinos early momentum with a pair of goals at the 8:00 and 8:44 marks of the first. Josh Tripp finished off a beautiful series of passes for the Bisons' first goal followed by another from Geordie Keane, giving the Bisons a 2-1 lead.
Calgary's
Kaden Elder did all the damage to the Bisons in the second period. The Saskatoon native scored his third and fourth goals of the year to give the lead back to his Dinos squad. Teammate and goaltender Matthew Greenfield did his part to keep his team in front with a couple of crucial saves throughout the period.
Calgary's third period goals came off the sticks of
Mitch Cook and
James Shearer to clinch the victory with the final score reading 5-2 in favour of the visitors.
The two teams will be in action again tomorrow at the Wayne Fleming Arena starting at 2 p.m. local time (1 p.m. MT), live on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
