CALGARY – After managing a split against the third-ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies, the University of Calgary DInos will look build momentum against a provincial rival in the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns this weekend.
This series will kick off Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. in Lethbridge followed by the back-end matchup Friday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena. This weekend split will be the final set between these two sides.
SLUMP BUMP
Heading into the back-end game against Saskatchewan, the Dinos had lost four of five games, surrendering 20 goals against in the losses.
Dane Gibson and
Logan Fisher combined to score three times in the final period to get the Dinos back into the win column, earning a 3-1 victory in their final game against the Huskies this season. The win pushed the Dinos back into the U SPORTS Top 10, who have been ranked as high as fifth so far this season. They sit ninth in this week's poll.
PRONGHORNS SITTING PRETTY
The Lethbridge Pronghorns under first year head coach Murray Nystrom are on the verge of making the Canada West playoffs for the first time since 2011-12. Currently the Pronghorns sit eight points clear of the seventh place Manitoba Bisons.
A big reason for this season's success is the emergence of forward Justin Valentino, who is in a four-way tie for second in Canada West scoring with 21 points. And the Pronghorns have plenty to play for, knowing they have a spot locked up in the University Cup national championship which Lethbridge will host in mid-March.
DINOS DOMINANCE
Entering this weekend series, the Dinos have flat-out dominated the Pronghorns in recent memory. Over the last five seasons, Calgary has posted a record of 14-2-2-0 in the last 18 games between these teams. Two of the 14 wins came this season, as the Dinos grabbed a weekend sweep over the Pronghorns back on Oct. 26-27. Lethbridge was outscored 7-1 in the two losses.
