CALGARY – Sitting in second in Canada West looking for a fifth straight win, the University of Calgary Dinos will take the ice against the Mount Royal University Cougars, in their first home-and-home split of the season.
The opening game between the two sides will take place on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Flames Community Arena, followed by the rematch on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena.
SWEEP-NESS
To say the Dinos have been rolling would be an understatement. Since losing three of four to start the season, the Dinos have rattled off four straight wins, completing weekend sweeps of UBC and Lethbridge.
In those four victories, the Dinos outscored their opponents 20-5, including an 8-2 thrashing of the Thunderbirds back on Oct. 20.
The victories have been in part due to the communal scoring they've shown, having nine different goal scoring during the four-game span, including
Mitch Cook,
Chris Rauckman and
Bradley Schoonbaert, who have 4 goals each.
Regan Nagy, fresh off scoring a goal in both wins against Lethbridge, including his first career USPORTS tally, was named the Canada West-WHL third star of the week.
RIVALRY RENEWED
Friday will mark the first time these teams renew pleasantries this season, which also marks the beginning of the annual crosstown smackdown, known as the Crowchild Classic.
Last season, the Dinos got the better of the Cougars, winning three of four games, including a 6-5 double overtime thriller at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
TALENTED 'TENDIES
The goaltending tandem of
Jordan Papirny and Matthew Greenfield have been steady over the last four wins, stopping 81 of 86 pucks that came their way.
Sitting fifth and seventh respectively for goals against average in Canada West, Papirny and Greenfield will likely alternate starts against the Cougars this weekend.
Last season, Papirny was solid against Mount Royal in his two starts, winning both games, allowing just 3 tallies on 53 shots against.
