CALGARY – The University of Alberta Golden Bears improved to 19-4 on the regular season with a four-set win over the University of Calgary Dinos Friday afternoon (25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21).
The Bears, hosts of next month's U SPORTS national championship tournament, rode double-digit kill performances from Alex McMullin (17), Taryq Sani (15), Ryan Nickifor (14) to the victory, dropping Calgary's record to 9-14 on the year.
Canada West kills leader
Curtis Stockton once again led the way for the Dinos with 19 kills in the matinee, played in front of several hundred Calgary schoolchildren.
Both teams came out flying to open the match, with the Dinos hitting better than 35 per cent in the first set – however, the Bears were even better at 56 per cent, putting down 16 kills in the opening frame and taking a 25-22 win.
The Dinos responded in the second to take a 25-21 win, and carried that momentum into the third, going up 4-0 quickly. However, that's when the Golden Bears got on track, going on a 7-0 run of their own to take the lead. Things continued to deteriorate for the home side from that point as the Dinos committed 11 hitting errors against just seven kills in the set, which the Bears won going away at 25-15.
Calgary held the lead for the majority of the fourth set, but Alberta broke open an 18-18 tie with a 5-0 run, bookended by a pair of McMullin kills, and went on to take the match with a 25-21 victory.
Alberta out-blocked the Dinos by a 13.5-7 margin in the contest, with 52 kills against Calgary's 40. The Bears were the more aggressive team at the service line, recording eight aces against 15 errors. Sani added a match-high nine digs for the Golden Bears, while freshman
Parker Siroishka led the Dinos with eight digs, also chipping in six six kills.
Alex Bader's seven kills put him second to Stockton in that category for Calgary.
The two teams will wrap up conference play Saturday afternoon in the Jack Simpson Gym, with game time scheduled for 1:30 p.m., live on CanadaWest.tv.
