CALGARY – The Dinos' season concluded with flair as they donned retro gold uniforms in a Battle of Alberta that took place in front of volleyball alumni as part of the University of Calgary's 50th anniversary.
Their provincial rivals, the Alberta Golden Bears, handed them the loss in four sets (21-25, 25-21, 18-25, 22-25) at the Jack Simpson Gym. The Dinos' 2016-2017 regular season ends with a 9-15 record while the Golden Bears' 20-4 record makes them one of the best teams in Canada West.
The Dinos stepped onto the hardwood confident and ready to play. Getting their final kills, aces, and digs of the season, the Dinos were able to edge the Golden Bears in the second set. The stronger Alberta team, however, kept the Dinos at bay.
Outside hitters Curtis Stockton and Alex Bader had a combined 27 kills to lead the Dinos' offence. Alex Cook proved to set up his teammates for success with 35 assists on the board. Overall, the Dinos had 44 kills, 5 aces, 9 blocks, 43 assists, and 26 digs to end the night.
Head coach Rod Durrant reflected on his main takeaways from the season. "Our team really grew together. They never gave up on each other. They were very loyal to each other...Our record doesn't reflect the quality of team and quality of volleyball that this team has played throughout the season. The learning part of that will be the key for the guys moving forward. There's 14 guys that will move forward with this team next year and we look forward to that continuing growth and that improvement. We need to get a little better and they're doing it."
This game marked the final game for Dinos seniors Stockton, Cook, and Sean Martin. Coach Durrant had high praise for them and was confident in what the future has in store for them.
"Our fifth year guys are class guys. Curtis will go play pro. Curtis will go get a contract. I'm pretty confident of that. The other two guys are smart guys. They're going on to move into the business world. Both of them are very intelligent. [Cook]'s got an engineering degree and [Martin]'s got a business degree. They are going to be successful," he said.
While the Dinos season has come to a close, the Golden Bears look ahead to playoffs and are preparing to host the U SPORTS national championship scheduled for March in Edmonton.
