CALGARY – In an authoritative win and series sweep against the Regina Cougars, the Dinos confidently subdued their opponents in three sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-15) at the Jack Simpson Gym.
The victory was especially sweet as the Dinos honoured fifth year players
Curtis Stockton,
Sean Martin, and
Alex Cook on Senior Night tonight. The Dinos' record improves to 9-13 in Canada West while the Cougars drop to 1-23.
All three sets were characterized by the Dinos turning up the offensive intensity and securing key kills, aces, and digs to emerge with the victory. The first set began close but errors by the Cougars gave the Dinos room to secure the scoreboard. The second set began with a Dinos run as they went up to 7 points while the Cougars were kept at 1. For the rest of the set, the Dinos dominated. The third set was a continuation of the Dinos' confident energy and they secured the win.
Outside hitter
Curtis Stockton had 15 kills to lead the Dinos' offence.
Alex Cook proved to set up his teammates for success with 26 assists on the board. Overall, the Dinos had 32 kills, 7 aces, 10 blocks, 31 assists, and 37 digs to end the night.
Stockton, who has been an invaluable player for the Dinos this season, was pleased with the team's performance tonight despite not qualifying for the playoffs. "Iit shows a lot of character that we can come out and perform at the top level that we should be performing at. We didn't dwell on anything and were still able to go out and perform which is very promising," he said.
"To be able to win on Senior Night and close it out is really good because there's a lot of pressure on the fifth year guys even though it is a celebration...we got knocked out of playoffs so it is good that we are still closing out games and we're still being successful and everyone's really positive. It was fun to be a part of"
The Dinos are scheduled to face the Alberta Golden Bears in the final games of their season on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 at home in the Jack Simpson Gym.
