CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos men's volleyball team swept the Regina Cougars 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-23) on Friday night at the Jack.
The Dinos improve to 8-13 on the season while the Cougars drop to 1-22.
Three Dinos hit double digits in kills on the night with
Alex Bader leading the way with 13, followed by
Tim Taylor with 12 and
Curtis Stockton with 10 kills and a game-high 14 digs. Setter
Alex Cook recorded 40 assists.
For the Cougars, Brennan Goski recorded a team-high 9 kills and Cody Caldwell, Matt Aubrey and Dalton Wolfe all added eight of their own. Setter Michael Corrigan added 31 assists.
The Dinos started off the match with a bang, coming out of the gates with a 6-2 lead. Outside hitter Taylor had the hot hand early on, setting the Dinos offence on fire. They went into the technical timeout with a five-point lead and never looked back. Taylor finished the 25-20 first set win with seven kills to lead all players.
Regina found their groove to start the second set and found themselves down by just one throughout the first half of the set. It wasn't until the technical that the Dinos took a 16-13 lead, and held it down with Bader and Stockton starting to contribute on offence. Calgary took the second set 25-20 with Stockton leading all players with nine digs.
In the third, the Cougars came out on fire, taking a 5-2 lead forcing the Dinos to call their first timeout. It wasn't until 10 all that the Dinos started to pull it together with some great serves and some scrappy defence. Tied until 17, missed serves from the Cougars helped the Dinos gain a two-point lead that they wouldn't be able to overcome. Calgary finished the game with a 25-23 win in the third.
The Dinos will host the Cougars in a rematch tomorrow night set for 5:30 p.m.
