Rookie Tanasichuk leads Dinos to victory over Huskies

SASKATOON - The No. 5 ranked University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in four sets (25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 25-11) Friday night at the PAC.

Coming into the matchup off their bye week, the 14-4 Dinos looked to continue their strong season against the 6-12 Huskies, who lost both of their games last weekend to UBC Okanagan.

Both teams traded points early on before a 10-3 Calgary run saw them grab a sizeable lead 14-8 to force a Saskatchewan timeout. The Dinos were never in any danger of surrendering the lead thereafter and cruised to an easy 25-15 first set lead. Kate Pexman led the way offensively grabbing five kills, as many as the Huskies combined, in the first set.

After a slow start, the Dinos trailed 5-1. Calgary clawed ahead with a 12-3 run to grab a 13-8 second set lead. The Huskies brought it to within two at 15-13, but a 9-1 run capped off by Hannah Tanasichuk's eighth kill of the match gave the Dinos set point at 24-14. Following four straight Saskatchewan points, which forced a Calgary timeout, a service error gave the Dinos the second set win, 25-18.

The third set started off as a back and forth affair, with neither team grabbing more than a one point lead until the Huskies were up 8-6. This trend continued right up to the technical timeout, with the Dinos leading 16-15. Calgary managed to buck this, going on a 6-1 run, giving them a 21-16 advantage after Jaylynn Moffat sent home her eighth kill of the match. It was all Huskies after that though, as a shocking 9-1 run stole the third set away from the Dinos, capped off by a service ace.

Following their hot start the Dinos finished the third set with only a 0.083 hitting percentage on ten kills, compared to the Huskies 17 on a 0.262 hitting percentage.

After seeing a sizeable third set lead slip away from them, Calgary came out strong in the fourth, taking an early 8-3 advantage. The Dinos carried this momentum into the technical timeout up 16-9, part of a 12-4 run which stretched their lead into double digits. Pexman's 11th kill of the match gave Calgary match point and Brianna Solberg ended it a play later, sending the ball off the Huskies block.

The Dinos finished the match with 51 kills, led by Tanasichuk, Pexman, and Moffat, who recorded 19, 11, and 9, respectively. Calgary's net presence was strong all night as they held the Huskies attack to a lowly 0.085 hitting percentage.

With the win the Dinos improve to 15-4 and move into third place in Canada West for the time being. The loss drops the Huskies to 6-13. Both teams are back at it tomorrow night. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 MST at the PAC.
