SASKATOON – The University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team completed the weekend sweep Saturday night, as they walked away with a straight sets win against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) at the PAC om Saskatoon.
Fresh off their four set victory against the Huskies last night, the Dinos looked to continue their momentum into Saturday's matchup.
Both teams traded points in the early going before a 6-1 Huskies run forced a quick Calgary timeout. With an energetic crowd behind them, Saskatchewan played the Dinos tough, grabbing an early 10-7 lead.
Hannah Tanasichuk, coming off her 19 kill performance last night, continued her strong play into Saturday. She recorded three straight kills and a block, part of a Dinos 7-1 run, which took Calgary into the technical timeout up 16-14. The Dinos never relinquished the lead thereafter, cruising to a 25-21 first set win.
Tanasichuk and
Kate Pexman led the Dinos offensively, as they logged ten of the Dinos 14 kills in the set.
In the second set it was Pexman who carried Calgary early, grabbing four of their first five kills. Following a back and forth affair to start, a quick 6-2 run in the middle of the set gave the Dinos breathing room, which they carried into the technical timeout 16-12. The Huskies tied it up momentarily, but the Dinos retook the lead and grabbed set point at 24-20. Saskatchewan clawed to within one, but Tanasichuk's ninth kill of the match finished off the set and gave Calgary a commanding two sets to none lead.
Pexman went off for the Dinos, as she recorded half of the team's 16 kills.
The Dinos started the third set off quickly, racing out to a 3-0 lead, only to see the Huskies tie it up. Once again, Pexman and Tanasichuk carried the Dinos offensively as they took a lead into the technical timeout for the third straight set. Calgary blew it wide open late, part of a 10-3 run that saw them extend the lead to 22-14. A
Brianna Solberg service ace gave the Dinos match point at 24-15 and after a lengthy rally Jaylynn Moffat finished off the straight sets victory with a resounding kill.
Calgary was led offensively all game by the duo of Pexman and Tanasichuk, who recorded 30 of the 43 Dinos kills in the match. Pexman finished the game with a tremendous 0.464 attacking percentage.
With their third straight win, Calgary improves to 16-4 on the season. Saskatchewan's recent struggles continued as they dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 6-14. With a playoff spot already clinched, the Dinos return home next weekend to face the University of Regina Cougars. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at the Jack Simpson Gym.
