CALGARY – Coming off a weekend split against the Mount Royal University Cougars in the season's first edition of the Crowchild Classic, the Calgary Dinos men's hockey team is preparing to face the Regina Cougars at Father David Bauer Arena.
After a 3-2 upset to Mount Royal at Father David Bauer Arena on Friday, the Dinos rebounded in a big way with a 5-1 victory at the Flames Community Arenas. Third-year forward Coda Gordon led the way with two goals, ensuring the Dinos left the weekend with points.
"It was huge for us to get that win back and stay ahead of the pack a little bit," explained Gordon. "If you want to stay competitive you cannot get swept, so it was nice to at least come back and split the series."
The Dinos will try to forget about their crosstown rivals until January when the two teams meet at the Scotiabank Saddledome on January 25. For now, the Dinos remain focused on a strong finish to the first half of their season. The Canada West standings are tightening up, as only a four-point gap exists between third-place Calgary and sixth-place Mount Royal. Fourth-place Manitoba and fifth-place UBC only trail the Dinos by one and two points.
"We know we need to be better and start putting a streak of wins together," noted Gordon, when asked about the competition in Canada West.
The Dinos face a Regina team that is looking to add another win to their column. Regina has just one victory on the season, beating Mount Royal in a shootout on October 13.
"We know Regina has given every team in the our league a tough time so far," explained Gordon. "We are not going to take them lightly and we will go into the game like we would with any other team in our league."
