CALGARY – Having officially clinched home field through to the Mitchell Bowl with last week's win over Regina, the University of Calgary Dinos look to keep things rolling into the Canada West playoffs as they take on the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday.
Kickoff for the final regular season matchup is set for 1 p.m. MT at McMahon Stadium. Streaming coverage for the game will be on CanadaWest.tv.
The Dinos record now sits at 7-0 as they continue to dominate their Canada West opponents. It was yet another impressive showing last Saturday in Regina as they came away with a 42-30 win over the Rams. After jumping out quickly to a 24-3 lead after the first quarter, the Dinos were able to stave off a Rams comeback with a late touchdown in the fourth to solidify the win. For their efforts, coupled with Montreal's loss to Laval, the Dinos earned the No. 1 national ranking for the first time since November 2015.
The Golden Bears kept their playoff hopes alive last weekend with a 49-23 home win over Saskatchewan – however, their fate lays in the hands of the Manitoba Bisons, regardless of Saturday's outcome. A Manitoba win over Saskatchewan puts Alberta into the playoffs, win or lose. The plot thickens when it comes to a Huskies win – the Bears can still make the playoffs, but would need to upset the Dinos and gain a net of 14 points against Saskatchewan. In that scenario, Alberta would need to beat Calgary by at least 14 points more than Saskatchewan beats Manitoba by.
HEADLINES
- Second meeting of the year between the provincial rivals, with Calgary taking a 55-26 win Sept. 1 at Foote Field in Edmonton
- The Dinos are riding a 16-game on-field win streak against the Golden Bears, dating back to the final week of the 2008 season. Officially, however, that streak is just four because of Calgary's 2014 forfeit
- The two teams could meet again next week: if Alberta makes the playoffs, they'll be right back at McMahon for a conference semifinal Nov. 4.
No. 1 CALGARY DINOS (7-0)
Last week: defeated Regina 40-32
Next week: host Canada West semifinal
- A Dinos win would complete an undefeated season for the third time in five years after previous 8-0 records in 2013 and 2015. The 2011 season was originally 7-1, before a retroactive forfeit improved it to 8-0 officially.
- QB Adam Sinagra is 18 completions away from tying the single-season school record of 178, set in 1983 by Greg Vavra. To date, Sinagra has the fifth-best passing season in school history with 2,272 yards and sits less than 100 yards behind Bob Torrance (2,360, 1989) for third place.
- Sophomore kicker Niko DiFonte is just nine points away from a 100-point season, which has only been done four times before by Dinos. Two of those were by kickers, with Johnny Mark pulling it off in 2012 and 2015
- With three sacks last week, Cory Robinson brought his season total to seven and his career to 14. He'll need four more to catch the Dinos' all-time leaders, Brian Shewchuk and Garrett Everson (18)
- As a team, the Dinos are just one sack away from the school record of 25 in one season, a mark set twice in 1995 and 2012.
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (2-5)
Last week: defeated Saskatchewan 49-23
Next week: TBD
- With 1,309 yards so far on the season, fifth-year Alberta running back Ed Ilnicki is among the frontrunners for the Canada West MVP award and is just 106 yards away from breaking the conference single-season rushing record that has stood for 18 years. The nation's leading rusher, Ilnicki also leads the country with 11 TDs on the ground.
- Although the Golden Bears have struggled to pick up wins this year, they are the top offensive team in Canada West with 3,496 total yards – thanks in large part to their rushing attack, which is second-best in the nation. They're 10 yards ahead of the Dinos in total offence heading into the finale
- Aaron Chabaylo has been a defensive threat at linebacker having made 39 tackles and assisting in 14 for a total of 46; good enough for top in the conference.
- A playoff berth for Alberta would be the Bears' first since 2010, when they upset Saskatchewan in the semifinal before falling to the Dinos in the 74th Hardy Cup.
