CALGARY – Just over a month after the teams last met, the University of Manitoba Bisons pay a visit to McMahon Stadium Saturday looking to exact some revenge on the University of Calgary Dinos, who spoiled Manitoba's Homecoming with a 76-17 victory Sept. 16.
Kickoff for the Week 6 tilt between the No. 2-ranked Dinos (5-0) and the Bisons (1-4) is set for 1 p.m. MT Saturday, live on CanadaWest.tv.
GAME NOTES (.pdf)
It's a tough road to the playoffs for the Bisons, who sit at the bottom of the conference standings with the Dinos, UBC, and Saskatchewan on the schedule to wrap up the season, and to have any hope of squeaking into the postseason they'll need to pull off the upset Saturday. The Dinos, on the other hand, control their own destiny: a win would clinch home field in the first round for Calgary for a 10th consecutive season, while a win coupled with a Regina loss would lock down first place and home field advantage through the Mitchell Bowl.
The Dinos enter the game after a big, emotional win at UBC before the Thanksgiving bye week and will need to be wary of the Bisons, who went into Regina and knocked off the then-No. 6 Rams thanks to a solid defensive performance including a pick-six by Jayden McKoy just befor the half.
HEADLINES
- Second of two meetings between the teams in the 2017 regular season, after the Dinos dominated in a 76-17 win Sept. 16 in Winnipeg
- The Dinos managed 29 points off turnovers and eight sacks in that contest as the defence set the table for the offence. The 76-point performance was thebiggest scoring output for Calgary since defeating Alberta with a CW-record 80 points, 80-18 Sept. 17, 2015
- Calgary native and St. Francis HS grad Des Catellier took over the reins as starting QB for the Bisons the week after the loss to Calgary. The sophomore's first start led the Bisons to their lone win of the season, an 18-16 win at Regina.
No. 2 CALGARY DINOS (5-0)
Last week: defeated UBC 31-17
Next week: at Regina
- The Dinos sit two games free and clear of the rest of the conference and lead the way in most statistical categories – including an impressive, nation-leading 51.8 points per game.
- Through five games, the Dinos have punted just 27 times – easily the lowest average in the nation. Sophomore kicker Niko DiFonte has been impressive in that department, averaging 41.3 yards per boot – an improvement of nearly seven yards over last year's team average
- QB Adam Sinagra is in the top-five nationally in passing yards, while receivers Hunter Karl and Michael Klukas both sit in the U SPORTS top five in receiving yards
- Calgary heads on the road to face the Regina Rams next week, making their first appearance at New Mosaic Stadium.
MANITOBA BISONS
Last week: lost 36-25 to Alberta
Next week: at UBC
- The Alberta Golden Bears dealt Manitoba's playoff losses a significant blow with a 36-25 win in Winnipeg before the break, led by Ed Ilnicki's 278 rushing yards and 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter
- Through the first two starts of his U SPORTS career, Catellier is 33-60 for 449 yards, one TD, and a pair of INTs. He is expected to make the start in his hometown Saturday
- Jamel Lyles is the team's rushing leader (360 yards), second-leading receiver (12 catches), and leader in return and all-purpose yards. His 886 all-purpose total is more than double the next player (WR Shai Ross), and he sits just behind Alberta's Ilnicki in second spot on the CW leaderboard in that department
- The Bisons return home to face the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend before closing the season at Saskatchewan Oct. 28.
