Big second half leads No. 5 Dinos to victory

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos took their offense to another level on Pack the Jack night Thursday and blew out the visiting Fraser Valley Cascades 106-68.

Despite a halftime lead of 43-37, the Dinos were outscored 24-19 in the second quarter and the Cascades had some momentum. That ended as soon as the third quarter started. Calgary would score 31 points in the third, followed by 32 in the fourth for the victory, with four players scoring double figures.

"We just knew we had to come out and move the ball more often," forward Dallas Karch said after the game, who finished with 15 points off the bench. "We got on a run and then shots  started falling and the energy just came for us."

Calgary got off to a strong start in the first quarter, highlighted by a Jhony Verrone dunk to make it 15-9 at the 4:07 mark. They led 24-13 going into the second and led by as many by 13 before UFV started hitting three-point shots to get back in the game. Of the Cascades 24 points in the second quarter, 21 of them came from beyond the arc, led by fifth-year point guard Manny Dulay.

In the third, Calgary ran UFV off the three-point line, while hitting five of their own, sparked by forward Lars Schlueter, who hit three in the quarter.

"The first half they were getting the open look and that really killed our momentum and then rebounding," Karch said. "We knew we needed to locate the ball early."

Meanwhile, Calgary turned Cascades turnovers into buckets in transition, with Karch and Verrone both throwing down dunks. The onslaught continued in the fourth quarter as the Dinos cruised to the 106-68 win, forged by their defensive intensity, which led to 33 points off 24 UFV turnovers.

Thomas Cooper led the way in scoring with 19, getting to the free throw line 12 times. Verrone had 12 off the bench and Mambi Diawara finished with 15. UFV was led in scoring by reserve Denver Sparks-Guest with 15.

With the win, Calgary improves to 9-2 following its loss to Alberta on Saturday, while UFV falls to 5-6.

"From here on out, with the RPI system, it's hard to say how we're going to finish. We have to get every win, especially at home," Karch said.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium at 8 M.T.
