CALGARY - Unlike their blowout win the night before, the University of Calgary Dinos had to fight hard in the second half to beat the UFV Cascades Friday for a 92-87 win. 

Point guard David Kapinga led the team in scoring with 16 points, while fifth-year guard Jasdeep Gill had a season-high 15 as the Dinos won by five. 
"Sometimes you get those 40-point wins and sometimes you have to grind it out too, it was just one of those nights," Gill said after the game. "Things weren't going our way, but we stuck together and kept our cool and pulled out a win.

A night after they routed UFV in a 106-68 victory, the Cascades came out focused led by fifth-year backcourt leader Manny Dulay, with a Denver Sparks-Guest three giving them a 15-10 lead midway through the first quarter. Calgary would respond with a 6-0 run, but UFV took the punch and returned another, taking a 20-16 lead into halftime. 

Calgary's Connor Foreman had a personal 6-0 run to start the second quarter, but like Thursday night in the second quarter, UFV used the long ball to stay in the game and trailed just 48-47 going into the third. Unlike the third quarter on Thursday where the Dinos dominated, the Cascades stayed with Calgary and traded baskets throughout the frame as neither team led by more than four points. 

With Calgary leading 68-64 in the fourth, they'd make their run, with Gill and Mambi Diawara hitting jumpers, followed by Lars Schlueter making a big three to make it 75-67. Dulay would get fouled on a three-point attempt and make all his free throws, but Calgary struck again with a Gill three making it 83-72 with 4:23 remaining, followed by a Kapinga layup to give Calgary their biggest lead of the game. 

But UFV refused to give up.

The Cascades would go on a 7-0 run and with 1:47 remaining, as Dulay would make an incredible three-point shot going in motion going to his right to cut the lead to 87-83. After a Gill free throw, UFV's Andrew Morris would make a layup to make it 88-85. 

Both teams would make two free throws each on subsequent possessions and UFV had the ball with 12 seconds remaining.  However, Sparks-Guest would take a questionable deep three with Thomas Cooper contesting him with five second left and miss, as Calgary iced the game at the line. 

The game included 13 ties and 12 lead changes, as UFV falls to 5-7, while Calgary improved to 10-2, with Saskatchewan visiting next weekend at the Jack. 

"They're big and they start really big, so we just need to be ready for that, ready to adapt and just play one game at a time and focus," Gill said. 

Along with Dulay who had 18, three other UFV starters ended in double figures, including Nav Bains with 12, Anthony Gilchrist with 14 and Mark Johnson with 11. 

Schlueter ended with 13, while Cooper added 11 in the win. 

Both teams shot around 50 per cent for the game, but Calgary's main advantage was in the paint, outscoring UFV inside 52-36.
