CALGARY - The Victoria Vikes took a 5-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
A tough loss for the Dinos and it was not what they had hoped to start their first game of the season off with, but despite that, the team still made some great efforts.
With three minutes into the first half of the game, the Vikes captured their first goal, leaving the Dinos off to a rusty start. The Dinos had some scoring opportunities with strong, clean passes but it was still not enough to put into the net.
"We didn't show what we could do and that's the most disappointing thing," said Dinos head coach
Peter Taylor. "We have improved greatly into this pre-season and we just didn't bring it out today. The girls were a little bit nervous for their first game and because we have improved, their expectations were higher and so mentally we weren't in the game from the start."
Great hustles were made by both teams with equal amount of possessions of the ball but nearing towards the end of the first half with six minutes left remaining, Victoria pulled ahead and snuck their second goal into the net, making it 2-0 before heading into the second half.
The Dinos struggled to get out of their zone for much of the second half and created a lot of advantages for the Vikes, where they had lots of scoring opportunities from penalty corners. They scored their third goal in the 58
th minute.
With three minutes left remaining in the game, the Vikes kept their momentum and put in two more goals, making it a 5-0 win against the Dinos.
Even though it was not their best performance, Dinos captain
Jessica Britton still maintained a positive attitude throughout the match.
"This team has made huge strides and I am super proud of everybody and we've made some great adjustments and some great improvements. This pre-season shows it from the beginning to the end. Unfortunately, today the nerves got the best of us and we weren't able to fully take this game for ourselves."
Despite the loss, Britton has confidence that tomorrow the team will show a better performance.
The teams will face each other again on Sunday at Hawkings Field.
