Dinos unfazed by Heat, rain

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team extended its perfect start to the season with a 6-2 triumph over UBC Okanagan on Sunday at West Varsity Pitch.

Much like Saturday's 10-0 drubbing of Thompson Rivers, pressure from the Dinos came early. In the 11th minute, midfield Maddie Lee scored the first goal of the game and her first of the season.

Three minutes later, still buzzing from their initial goal, the Dinos scored another, with Mollee Ramsay passing to Natalie Arnett, whose skilled footwork allowed the team to take on a 2-0 lead.

The home side did not stop there, upping their tempo and, by the 32nd minute, was leading three-nil thanks to a penalty kick by Ramsay. This was Ramsay's fourth goal this season, following a hat-trick in the season opener on Saturday.

The Dinos unwearied perseverance paid off yet again in the 51st minute when Jordan Smith found herself with the ball close to the Heats goalkeeper. Her shot flew right beside the arms of Chloe Ainsworth, giving Calgary a 4-0 lead, and Smith her fourth goal of the season. Arnett drew the assist on the tally.

Head Coach Troye Flannery praised Smith, dubbing her 'a handful.' He added, "She's going into her fourth year, and from day one here she's proven her worth. I'm really proud of her; she doesn't get enough credit. She's setting them up, she's scoring them, and physically, she's tough to contain."

Smith proved Flannery's words to be true when she set up teammate Carmen Lee with a perfect scoring opportunity in the 69th minute, which Lee took full advantage of, raising the stakes to 4-0 and giving Smith her ninth point of the season after a record-setting seven-point outburst Saturday.

Rookie Kelsie MacDonald found the net for the third time this season moments later, in the 72nd minute, with the help of Maddie Lee.

UBC Okanagan also found opportunity in the 55th and 79th minutes, with Lauren Candelario and Maya Bandy both defeating the Dinos goalkeeper, respectively, off set pieces.

Despite this, for the majority of the rainy, windy afternoon the field continued to tilt in favor of Calgary as the Dinos overwhelmed UBC Okanagan with 19 shots fired, forcing Ainsworth into four saves. UBCO managed only 10 shots, pressuring the Dinos into four saves.

Although his team remained victorious, coach Troye Flannery cautioned his team against getting too comfortable with themselves, after a 10-0 win from the day before and a 3-0 lead when going into half time.

"Unfortunately, some people came into the game a little content," he said. "We are guilty of feeling too good about ourselves. I've said so many times, it's a good league, good coaches, and its always going to be a fight; the score-lines don't tell the whole story. I think we learned that a bit today. We were exceptional in the first half and adjusted to what they wanted to do, and I was very pleased. Second half a little disappointed that we thought the job was done."

UBC Okanagan will be on home soil next weekend hosting UNBC and the University of Alberta. The Dinos will be away next weekend as they travel to face-off Mount Royal and MacEwan.
