CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team remains undefeated on the young season after a 4-0 win over crosstown rivals Mount Royal Saturday at MRU.
Coming into the game after a perfect two-game homestand last weekend, the Dinos picked up right where they left off.
Maddie Lee opened the scoring early for the second straight game, beating the keeper in fourth minute for her second goal this season, with the assist going to
Carmen Lee. This early goal set the tone for the match as the Dinos would control the game the rest of the way.
The Dinos added another goal at the 32 minute mark, this time with
Carmen Lee finding the back of the net for her second goal of the season after a nice pass from
Maddie Lee. Seconds later the Dinos nearly made it 3-0 when
Jordan Smith had a high-quality scoring chance stopped by MRU 'keeper Cailyn Leeson.
Calgary would capitalize once more before the halftime whistle blew with
Natalie Arnett converting on a sharp angle shot in the 36th minute after a long lead pass and misplay by the Cougars' goalkeeper. This was Arnett's second goal of the campaign and gave the Dinos a solid 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half would prove to be a continuation of the first for the Dinos as they controlled the ball the majority of the way. The Dinos would add on another goal, this time from
Maddison Fritze, her third of the season, tipping in a
Dominica Wronski cross in the 77th minute.
When asked about his team's early successes this year, Head Coach
Troye Flannery attributed it to the team's athleticism. He added, "There still is some work to do; our finishing ratio isn't as high as it needs to be, but we're very athletic. That's why we are difficult to play against going forward. We just have to keep going after it, finish our chances and good things will continue to happen."
Although untested for the majority of the game, Dinos keeper
Sophia Traxler stopped the only shot she faced to record her second clean sheet of the season. The Dinos, on the other hand, fired 14 shots towards Cougars keeper Cailyn Leeson, keeping her on her toes for most of the afternoon.
With the dominating performance the Dinos grab early bragging rights in the Crowchild Classic.
With the 4-0 win, the Dinos move to 3-0, perched atop the Canada West East Division. The Dinos will remain on the road with a game at MacEwan Sunday at 12 p.m. in Edmonton. With the loss, the tough start for the Cougars continued as they fall to 0-3. They remain at home Sunday with Lethbridge as the visiting team.
