CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team grabbed its first win of the season with a spectacular 10-0 victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Saturday afternoon.
Returning midfield
Mollee Ramsay scored twice for the Dinos in the opening half, with both goals coming off teammate
Jordan Smith. Ramsay defeated the Thompson Rivers goalkeeper in the 8
th minute, only to comeback for another goal in the 44
th, and completed a hat-trick just six minutes later, with an assist by rookie
Kelsie MacDonald.
Calgary clearly dominated the game, and the girls continued to press their opponents, collecting three goals before the end of the half, and seven more after. Despite this fact, Head Coach
Troye Flannery, remained slightly unimpressed with the first half.
"I know it may sound funny, but I was a bit disappointed with the first half," said Flannery, "I thought we needed to finish more of our chances; we generated a good 13, 14 maybe even 15 of them. We tidied that up though in the second half."
Smith, the team's leading goal scorer last season, proved her strength on the field by performing a marvelous hat-trick, scoring in the 27
th, 48
th, and 57
th minute, after receiving assistance from
Mollee Ramsay,
Talia White and
Maddison Fritze, respectively.
Smith capitalized on her on-field strength, and, in the 54
th minute, passed to newcomer MacDonald, who neatly kicked the ball straight into the net. Minutes later, in the 72
nd minute, MacDonald received another pass from Smith and exploited the opportunity by scoring her second goal of the season.
The Dinos did not back down despite their 8-0 lead;
Maddison Fritze assisted the team in the double-digit domination by scoring twice in the last minutes of the game. First in the 81
st minute with an assist by
Dominica Wronski, and then again at the 90 minute mark, right before the final whistle.
Despite the 10-0 win, the team isn't able to celebrate for too long, having another game tomorrow. The teams coach,
Troye Flannery explained that, "the girls know it's a tough league and you can't dwell on positives or negatives very long, cause you have to press reset right away. It is expected that we press reset right away and start again tomorrow."
Calgary finished the day with 34 shots compared to three by Thompson Rivers.
Sophia Traxler made two saves for the Dinos, while Thompson River goalies Alyssa Smith and Brenna Worsfold turned away 12 attempts.
Both teams return to action tomorrow as Thompson Rivers faces the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, and Calgary takes on UBC-Okanagan Heat at 12:00 p.m. at West Varsity Pitch.
