CALGARY - The Dinos cruised past the struggling Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Jack Simpson Gym to make their winning streak five games straight. After the authoritative 77-43 win, the Dinos improve to a 12-4 record while the Horns go 1-14 for the season.
In the first half, both teams set the pace for the rest of the game with strong ball movement and an impressive back and forth. Although the Horns have only won one game in the regular season, their level of intensity and passion on the court was high as they tried to chip away at the Dinos.
However, a strong showing by Dinos anchors Claire Colborne (14 points, 12 rebounds), Kelsey Lund (10 points, 5 rebounds), and Kristie Sheils (13 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds) was indicative of the rest of the night. The Dinos edged out the Horns offensively and were able to force them into odd situations on the court where they were forced to take haphazard shots. A strong spark off the bench tonight was Anmol Mattu (10 points, 3 assists, 4 steals) who hit the court exploding with hustle and inspiring her teammates.
After gaining a comfortable lead late in the first quarter, the Dinos carried the momentum for the rest of the game and emerged victorious with a 34 point lead. The Dinos won the rebound contest 50-32, the assist contest 18-4, and made 10/18 of their free throws.
Although head coach Damian Jennings was aware of the Dinos' strong upper hand against the Horns in terms of season record, he knew he had to keep his squad focused. He said "I think the challenge when you a play a team where you're supposed to win on paper is [that] you're going to judge yourself on your performance without assuming you're going to win. The Pronghorns at their best and us at our worst...maybe the Pronghorns win that game"
"For us, we talked about the discomfort that there is [when you are] playing so intensely that you actually find the joy of being uncomfortable. We felt that we had to challenge ourselves enough to create our own discomfort. How fast could our fast breaks be? How hard could we hit bodies? How quickly could we move the ball? Almost to the point where you're demanding the substitution and the next wave goes in."
Tomorrow, the Dinos will look to finish the doubleheader against Lethbridge and improve to a 6 game win streak in the Jack Simpson Gym.
