Dinos dominate in doubleheader against 'Horns

CALGARY - With the strong 80-50 win, the Dinos crushed the Lethbridge Pronghorns in both games of their weekend doubleheader at the Jack Simpson Gym to make their winning streak 6 games straight. The Dinos improve to a 13-4 record while the Horns drop to 1-15 for the season.

In the first half, both teams hit the hardwood evenly matched and played at a high level of intensity. While the Dinos dominated offensively, the 'Horns clawed well into the second quarter to keep the score within reach. However, the Dinos would statistically overpower the competition in virtually all categories and made keeping the game close a near impossibility for the 'Horns.

The Dinos won the rebound contest 52-35, the steal contest 11-6, and the block contest 5-0. They outscored the 'Horns 40-12 in the paint and gained 26 points off of their 25 turnovers. The stars of the game were Kristie Sheils (19 points on 7-9 shooting, 2 steals, 2 assists), Claire Colborne (18 points on 7-12 shooting, 15 rebounds), and Kelsey Lund (14 points on 7-9 shooting, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks). Ashley Hirons was a key scorer with early threes to set the Dinos' offense in motion before heading off the court due to leg injury.

Head coach Damian Jennings was pleased with his team and recognized the hard work of the struggling Lethbridge squad.

"When we played really well, it was really fun to watch. Some wonderful fast break basketball and the heat we were able to create defensively...and then there was the other end of us, which got a little bit slow, stagnant" He said. "I think part of that was us but part of it was, like we said last night, Lethbridge just don't give up. They play very well, they coach very well, and they're living off those opportunities that they create from their defense"

An exciting week awaits the Dinos! They will face the Regina Cougars in the Jack Simpson Gym on February 11 for the annual Pack the Jack and on February 12 for Seniors' Night. These will be the final home games for the squad as they anticipate scores of students to support them with playoffs just around the corner.
