ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – For the second consecutive year,
Holly Ellsworth-Clark brought home the sole CIS gold medal for the University of Calgary Dinos at the CIS National Championships. She defeated Huskies' rookie Kiera Prior for the 82 kg weight title.
As a fifth year graduating athlete, Ellsworth-Clark wraps up her CIS career with three CIS gold medals and one silver medal. The only year she failed to medal was in 2013 when she missed the National Championships due to injury.
The Dinos women added a silver medal and two bronze to finish second overall in team standings for the third consecutive year, behind the dominant Brock Badgers.
Cara Nania (55 kg) picked up a silver medal to add to the bronze she earned at the 2015 CIS Championships.
Tianna Kennett (59 kg) and
Temitope Ogunjimi (63 kg) both won their bronze medal matches to round out the medallists on the women's side.
The top performance on the men's side came from
Connor Hodgins (76 kg), who finished with a silver medal.
Spenser Burk (68 kg) added a bronze medal with a victory over McMaster's Chris Garneau. The Dinos' men's team finished seventh overall in team standings.
The Brock Badgers swept the men's and women's National Championship banners for the third consecutive year. This year was particularly special for them, as they completed the sweep in at home in the Bob Davis Gym in St. Catharines, Ontario.
The Badgers' men's team finished with 80 points and ten medals, while the women's team reached 69 points and seven medals. The victory for the Brock women gives them the all-time CIS record for most consecutive National titles in women's wrestling.
UNB's Alyssa Cleaves along with Alberta's Michael Asselstine and Winnipeg's Finn Higgins were named the 2016 CIS Most Outstanding Wrestlers. The Golden Bears' Asselstine became the first male wrestler to win the award in three consecutive seasons.
Brock's Marty Calder was named the 2016 CIS Men's and Women's Coach of the Year. Other major award winners included Western's Ligrit Sadiku and Saskatchewan's Kiera Prior who were named the 2016 CIS Rookies of the Year. York's Alexandria Town and Winnipeg's Brock Munro were the R.W Pugh Fair Play Award recipients. Winnipeg's Kyle Nguyen received the CIS Community Service Award.
