CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos completed the weekend sweep with a 2-1 win against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Saturday evening, Oct. 29th at the Father David Bauer Arena.
"It was a tough game, they played us hard," said Dinos forward
Dylan Walchuk. "We had to stick with it because we could have folded after the first two periods when we weren't scoring or getting a lot of chances, but we stuck with the game plan and in the third period it showed, we started breaking through and getting some chances and we were able to find the back of the net. It was a really good character win for us."
Looking to even the series after a 5-3 loss Friday evening in Lethbridge, the Pronghorns converted on a power play late in the first period to take an early lead.
Torrin White fed Tim Campbell on the point for a one-timer that was deflected off of the leg of teammate Cory Millette, to open the scoring.
Both teams exchanged scoring chances in the second period. Calgary went 0 for 2 on the power play. On the Dinos second power play of the period, Pronghorns Mitchell Maxwell had a breakaway on a Dinos turnover, but couldn't convert as he shot wide of Dinos goaltender
Matt Greenfield.
Calgary found its way onto the scoreboard just three minutes into the final stanza. After Walchuk had a goal disallowed for a high stick, seconds later,
Elgin Pearce capitalized on a tic-tac-toe play tying the game up at one-a-piece. Drydn Dow and Walchuk had helpers on the goal.
"It was nice to see it go in the net, even if it was called off. We took that momentum and carried through with it," stated Walchuk.
The Dinos continued with their scoring touch two minutes later on the power play. Walchuk beat Pronghorns' goaltender Damien Ketlo on a cross-crease pass from Pearce.
Braiden Doucette added an assist on the play.
Calgary nearly lost its lead with two back-to-back penalties late in the third, allowing Lethbridge a 5-on-3 power play. The Pronghorns couldn't beat Dinos' Greenfield to even the game up.
Lethbridge will travel to Vancouver next weekend to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in a two game series, Nov.4-5th.
"This weekend was a huge confidence booster for the team, because it was a hard weekend," explained Walchuk. "It wasn't an easy one, the games weren't handed to us. We had to go out and work for them, and to come out and win from behind in the third period is huge for our confidence and it'll help us going forward."
The Dinos will host the University of Manitoba Bisons next weekend, Nov. 4-5th. Puck will drop at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4th and 2 p.m. on the 5th at the Father David Bauer Arena.
