Dinos reel in first win of the Season

CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos claimed their first win and shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Friday evening, Oct. 14th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

"It was a one nothing game but I thought we did a lot of good things," explained Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "It's early on, there are still lots of things to work on but overall guys played hard and were really committed to trying to do the right thing."

Looking to start the season off right, on home ice, the Dinos held the Thunderbirds from generating any momentum on three separate power plays in the first period.

Calgary's penalty trouble continued into the second period. UBC started the period with a seven second power play. Calgary took another trip to the sin bin, allowing the Thunderbirds their fourth power play that they couldn't capitalize on.

"We need to put our sticks away and not take those penalties," stated Howell. "I think that took away some of our momentum in the first period, once we got going again in the middle of the second we started to play a little bit better.

The Dinos held the Thunderbirds to only one shot in the middle stanza, and put away the first and only goal of the game.

Mitch Cook skated across the crease and was denied by UBC's Matt Hewitt, Logan Fisher picked up the rebound walked into the slot and put home his first as a Dino, beating Hewitt five-hole.

"It was good to get that one out of the way, it was exciting to be in my first game and to get that one early, was fun," added Fisher.

UBC began to run into penalty trouble near the end of the period taking back to back trips to the box, giving the Dinos a brief 5-on-3 opportunity. The Dinos couldn't capitalize with the advantage.

The Dinos contained the puck in the Thunderbirds territory for majority of the third period. Despite both teams running into penalty trouble the Dinos found a way to keep the puck out of the net.

UBC took a late penalty in the third period, pulling Hewitt for 5-on-5 action. Calgary failed to pot an empty netter.

Stanford stopped all 20 shots that came his way for his first shutout of the season and fourth CIS career shutout.

"Stanford played good. He was in control of his crease, didn't give up a ton of rebounds," stated Howell. "I thought our team defense was pretty good, overall as a unit we were good."

The two teams will face off again in a matinee game. Puck is set to drop at two o'clock at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
