Dinos sweep Thunderbirds

CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos swept the weekend with a 1-0 victory against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 15th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

"It was really big for us to get the win today. Getting a sweep is always tough, so it's huge when we can get one," stated Dinos assistant captain Drydn Dow.

In a rematch of last nights, Dinos 1-0 victory, the Thunderbirds weren't going to let penalty trouble interfere with their game, as both teams managed to stay out of the penalty box for the most part in the first period.

Dinos Coda Gordon almost had the first goal of the game after his penalty. Catching UBC's defense on the Dinos line Gordon came out of the box to a break away pass. Looking to Derek Dun blocker side, Gordon hit the post, keeping the game at a standstill at the end of the first.

The Thunderbirds began to run into penalty trouble in the middle stanza. Denying Calgary on one of its power plays but they couldn't keep the puck out of the net for Calgary's second power play of the period.

Brayden Sherbinin passed the puck to Coda Gordon across the blue line who hit Chris Collins with a pass down low on the goal line. Collins spotted Drydn Dow back-door, making a cross-crease pass for Dow to tap in.

"It was nice getting that goal," explained Dow. "It was a great pass from Chris, I barely touched it, it just went in off my stick."

The Dinos held onto their lead throughout the third period. The Thunderbirds pulled Dun with just over a minute left in the period but the Thunderbirds just couldn't beat Steven Stanford for a second straight game.

Stanford increased his CIS career shutout tally to five with the second win against UBC this weekend, stopping all 34 shots that came his way.

"We've been playing pretty solid on D but you have to give a lot of credit to Stanford," noted Dow. "He stood in there and made a bunch of huge saves for us. He's been huge for us both games this weekend."

UBC will host the University of Alberta Golden Bears next weekend, Oct. 21-22.

Calgary will play a home-and-home series against its' city rivals the Mount Royal University Cougars.

"That's always a tough series, they swept their weekend too so it's going to be a big series for us to come out hard," stated Dow. "We have to come with the same intensity and hopefully score a couple more next weekend."

The Dinos will travel down Crowchild for Friday evenings action before returning to home ice Saturday. Puck will drop at 6 o'clock on Oct. 22nd at the Father David Bauer Arena.
