SASKATOON - The No. 6 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies survived a University of Calgary Dinos bid for a comeback winning 89-80 Friday at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Leading 50-41 at halftime, Calgary came out strong in the third quarter outscoring the Huskies 17-11 in the frame to be within three at 61-58.
Philip Barndt foul shots brought the Dinos within one at 61-60 to begin the fourth quarter but Matthew Forbes hit a jumper on the next trip down the court to extend Saskatchewan's lead. Once more in the quarter Calgary was able to pull within one after a long three-pointer from Josh Owen-Thomas but Saskatchewan answered with a Trevor Severinski three of their own and never looked back. The Huskies outscored Calgary 28-22 in the quarter to seal the win.
With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 14-5, while Calgary drops to 12-7. Both the Huskies and Dinos have secured playoff spots but this final weekend of regular season men's basketball will decide positioning. Saskatchewan would secure first place with a sweep over the Dinos, while Calgary needs a win in the series to keep pace with in the tight standings.
Dadrian Collins led the Huskies with 21 points, followed by Forbes and Ben Baker with 17 points each. Connor Burns led Saskatchewan on the boards with eight rebounds.
Barndt led Calgary with a game-high 22 points on the night, while Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson added another 17. Barndt also led the Dinos with six rebounds.
Calgary finished the night shooting at 50%, while the Huskies shot at 57%.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at the PAC in the final regular season game. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. and can be viewed on canadawest.tv
