BOX SCORE SASKATOON - With a 94-73 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon, the No. 6 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies clinched first place in the Canada West Pioneer Division.
Saskatchewan finished the season with a 15-5 record and will await its opponent for the conference best-of-three quarter-finals from the Canada West play-in series slated for next weekend. Calgary, who finished at 12-8, will compete in the play-in.
Mike Scott led the Huskies with a game-high 27 points, while Ben Baker and Dadrian Collins each tallied 14. Evan Ostertag and Mike Scott each chipped in another 12 apiece from the bench. Baker led the Huskies on the boards with seven rebounds.
LJ Hegwood led the Dinos in the loss with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Johny Verrone added 18 points.
It was the second half that made the difference in the game for Saskatchewan.
Calgary had the edge after the first quarter 22-17 and led throughout the majority of the second frame until a Trevor Severinski jumper tied the game at 33. Scott and Severinski hit back-to-back three-pointers to close the half to give Saskatchewan a 39-33 lead at halftime.
The Dinos opened the third quarter with a Hegwood three-pointer but he Huskies took over the game and outscored Calgary 27-21 in the third. The Huskies added another 28 points in the fourth to Calgary's 19.
The Dinos finished in fifth in the Pioneer Division, and will host the Manitoba Bisons in a play-in series, Feb. 20-22. Tip-off is set for 7pm Friday and Saturday and if a game is necessary on Sunday, it will begin at 3pm.
