CALGARY – After a commanding 5-0 victory in last night's contest, the University of Calgary Dinos suffered a 3-2 double overtime loss to the University of Regina Cougars on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Just 23 seconds into the second overtime, Cody Fowlie capitalized on a 2 on 1 rush to give the Cougars the victory. Regina picked up just their second win of the season, improving to 2-8, while the Dinos record dropped to 4-6.
"We came out a little bit flat-footed compared to yesterday, maybe we took it a little lightly after we dominated most of the play last night which in this league you can never do," explained Dinos' assistant captain,
Spencer Edwards. "We felt that we did it to ourselves and we're going to have to learn from that, because we're putting ourselves in a tough spot."
Despite dominating the majority of the first period, the Dinos fell behind 1-0 in the final minute of the first period. With Dinos' rookie
Mike Winther in the box for tripping, Cougars' defenseman Mark Schneider buried a back door pass from Trent Lofthouse to put his team up by a goal after the first period.
In the middle frame, the Dinos picked up the equalizer with a power play tally of their own at 8:33. When the rebound from
Max Ross' point shot came loose to
Spencer Edwards, he shoveled it back to Dinos' leading scorer
Chris Collins who roofed his shot to tie the game at 1-1.
Less than a minute into the third, the Cougars regained the lead when Ian McNulty made a nice move behind the net to set up Sanfred King in the slot who beat Stanford low blocker side. With 3:08 remaining in the third, Calgary pulled even once again as
Elgin Pearce picked up
Spencer Edwards' rebound and blew it past the Cougars netminder.
"We put ourselves in a position where we had to claw our way back and when you do that, sometimes they're going to go in, but their goalie played really well and stopped a lot of chances in the third, so it was a bit frustrating, but overall we know we can't put ourselves in that position in the first place."
After the five minute 4 on 4 overtime period solved nothing, the Cougars ended the game quickly in the 3 on 3 double overtime, as Cody Fowlie had an easy tap in on a nice feed from Landon Peel off of a 2 on 1 rush.
Regina will head home to face the Mount Royal Cougars next weekend, Nov. 13 and 14. The Dinos will face a tough University of Alberta Golden Bears team in a home-and-home series.
"U of A have been our main rivals for the past several years so it shouldn't take a lot to get the guys energized for that," said Edwards. "We're going to have to play to the best of our abilities both games if we're going to get the results we want."
These two Alberta rivals will face off in Calgary at Father David Bauer Arena Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. MT.
