CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos fell to the University of Alberta Golden Beats 6-1, Friday evening, Nov. 13th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
No love was lost between these two provincial rivals. Neither team sat back on their heels in the first period as they fought to get onto the scoreboard but Alberta would begin to pull ahead in the second period before truly finding the form of national defending champions in the third period.
"As a whole we could have done a lot better," stated second year forward Phil Tot. "We got away from the game. Alberta is a good skating team; we just have to stick to doing the little things especially against them. They can make you pay for your mistakes. We have to stick to the game plan."
The Golden Bears would sneak a goal in at the buzzer marking the end of the first period. Levko Koper fired a shot from the goal line at Dinos' goaltender Steven Stanford who made the initial save and the rebound save but James Dobrowoiski was in front to put in the third shot. Jordan Hickmott picked up an assist on the play.
Alberta would increase their lead just 50 seconds into the middle stanza when Riley Keiser passed the puck from behind the net to Hickmott who was out front ready to redirect the puck five-hole and in.
The Golden Bears would increase their lead to 3-0 just over a minute later. A scramble ensued in front of the Standford, the Dinos could not clear the puck as Golden Bear Brett Ferguson has put the puck in. Jamie Cook and Jayden Hart picked up helpers on the goal.
Looking to break Luke Siemens shutout Calgary came out with a vengeance, Alberta had different plans however. Kruise Reddick rushed into Calgary's zone and made a sauce pass over to Wil Tomchuk who redirected the puck high over Standford's glove and in.
The Dinos found their way onto the scoreboard mid-way through the third period on the power play. Drydn Dow took a slap shot from the point; Phil Tot was in front to put his first goal of the season in.
"It was a bit of relief to get that first one, I had to get my feet under me," explained Tot. "It's not easy to come back after being out for six weeks."
Calgary's goal was short lived as Koper skated into the Dinos zone just a minute later and fired a wrist shot blocker side and in on Standford to increase their lead once again to 4.
The Golden Bears would finish out the evening scoring a short-handed goal with just over three minutes to play in the third. A turnover on Alberta's blue line lead to a breakaway that Stephane Legault capitalized on.
The Dinos will be looking to split the weekend as they take on the Golden Bears again tomorrow evening in Edmonton.
"We're going to need a better effort than what we gave tonight," said Tot. "Alberta is one of the hardest rinks to play in, we need to learn from this and keep it simple and stick to our game plan."
