Dinos fall to Wesmen in season opener

CALGARY - In a rough season opener, the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team suffered a 72-51 loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen. Despite the homecourt advantage, the Wesmen were able to dominate the Dinos throughout the game.

The first half saw both teams get off to slow offensive starts with baskets not falling for either team and defensive breakdowns. However, the Wesmen were able to edge the Dinos with more efficient scoring and took advantage of clumsy plays by the Dinos.

Dinos guard Kristie Sheils kept the team on the board especially with her standout performance in the first half. She ended the game off with 13 points, 5/10 FG, and 3/7 three point shooting. Other key players for the Dinos tonight were forward Vanessa Wesolowski, with 11 points, 4/6 FG, and 2/2 FT and guard Emma Nieuwenhuizen, with seven points, 2/5 FG, 2/2 FT, and two steals.

At the end of the half, the Dinos trailed the Wesmen 32-21 and this continued to be the story as the game wore on. Dinos' turnovers were costing them play after play and the Wesmen were often able to capitalize with ease. At the end of the game, the Wesmen scored 28 points off of 27 Dinos turnovers. Despite a few inspired plays and attempts to claw back into the game, the Wesmen dominated the Dinos for a 72-51 win.

Dinos head coach Damian Jennings shared his frustration at the end of the game. He said "we're incredibly disappointed in the performance as much as the result. The performance kind of made the result happen so we are fully accountable to that...we are open to admit it and we are open to make those changes tomorrow, we hope."

Despite this early setback, expectations for the rest of the season continue to be very high. Jennings said, "we are a good team...we've put together a comprehensive preseason. I like the group we have. We have great balance. Defensively, we're still finding our way but offensively we've made some real shifts which is why it's so disappointing today that we didn't commit to our normal DNA and brand of basketball."

The Dinos will face the Wesmen again tomorrow in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium to avenge their loss from tonight and make the adjustments they need to have a winning season.
