Dinos bounce back with big 22-point win

CALGARY - It felt as if the University of Calgary Dinos were on their way to another loss to the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night, but they turned it around in the second half en route to a 69-47 victory.

Unlike their poor start Friday night, Calgary jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the first in game two of the season, but Winnipeg responded with a run of their own and trailed only 12-10 going into the second.

The Wesmen kept control in the second, outscoring the Dinos 19-9 and headed into overtime with a 29-21 lead.

But things changed in the third when guard Brianna Ghali checked into the game.

After just two points in the first half, Ghali exploded for 15 in the second leading the team in the comeback.

Her layup at the 4:16 would tie the game at 35 and after Kelsey Lund scored soon after, the Dinos wouldn't trail again, outscoring the visiting team 22-8 in the frame.

Dinos Head Coach Damian Jennings praised Ghali's play.

"That's the most composed I've seen her play, 25 minutes of basketball, 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one turnover," he said.

While Ghali took control on the offensive end, fellow Calgarian Claire Colbourne dominated on the boards with 21 rebounds to go along with 12 points.

"Claire didn't even score as well as she can, you've seen her play better at putting the ball in the hoop, but her rebounding was unreal tonight," Jennings said.

Led by Colbourne, the Dinos dominated on the boards 63-36.

Calgary kept control in the fourth quarter, winning the period 26-10 for the 22-point win, a stark contrast from Friday night, when they fell 72-51.

Both teams are now 1-1, as the Dinos Kristie Shiels, Emma Nieuenhuizen and Kelsey Lund also reached double-figures.

Unlike game one the series when Winnipeg's Megan Noonan went off for 27 points, Calgary's defense kept her in check with 11 on 2-15 shooting, also fouling out of the game.

Calgary will travel next weekend to Winnipeg, but for a tilt with the Manitoba Bisons.
