CALGARY- The University of Calgary Dinos claimed their first shutout of the season with a 5-0 win against the University of Regina Cougars, Friday evening, Nov. 6th at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Looking to get back into the win column the Dinos came out ready to play and focused. Calgary held Regina to a mere five shots in the first period, Regina's first shot on net happened at the midway mark of the first period.
"Nice to finally play a 60 minute game and not have any bad lapses. Beside from taking penalites I thought that we played our best game of the year," stated third year forward Chris Collins.
Calgary claimed their first goal of the period at the six-minute mark when Elgin Pearce passed the puck to Adam Kambeitz on a two-on-one. Kambeitz caught the pass in front and put it past Regina goaltender Dawson McAuley five hole. Dinos captain Kevin King picked up an assist on the play.
Just over a minute later the Dinos' Cain Franson cycled the puck to Collins. Collins passed the puck to Coda Gordon who was cutting across the top of the circle and fired a shot low blocker side passed a screened McAuley.
Calgary continued to pressure Regina in the middle stanza despite running into some penalty trouble. The pressured paid off at the five-minute mark when Max Ross got his second goal of the season. Ross waited out McAuley crossing the crease and beating him blocker side on the ice.
Collins scored the Dinos fourth goal of the game and his fourth of the season just three minutes into the third period on an end-to-end rush, using a Cougar defender as a screen and beating McAuley high blocker side.
Calgary closed out the scoring for the evening midway through the period on the power play. Pearce worked the puck down low passed the puck out front to undefended King who put the puck in.
"They're going to show up ready to play tomorrow," explained Collins. "We have to make sure we play our game and we can't just expect to win we have to make sure we play 60-minutes."
The two teams will face off again tomorrow evening. Puck is set to drop at six o'clock at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
